Duncan ‘Donk’ Aleksandr
Duncan is my black and white parti co.cker spaniel. Since Foo doesn’t have that breed and even if they did they likely wouldn’t look like Duncan, I figured a Portuguese Water Dog would be a decent match.
Back in summer of 2010 after months of begging (techinally years but the place we had been living at previously didn’t allow dogs and we had just moved around this time), my mom finally agreed to get me a dog. Dogs were my favorite animal since I was one year old. I loved our old husky so much and missed him terribly when we had to rehome him. Still do. I have countless dog plushes and had always wanted a real dog to call my own especially as I grew older. While that dream did eventually come true with Keegan, he lived over an hour away with my father who I rarely saw. I missed out on a lot with Keegan because of this and due to being on bad terms with my father at the time, I never got to say goodbye to him either when he was put down.
One night in late July of 2010 my mother called me in to the kitchen where she was reading the newspaper we had gotten that day. She asked me to look up a dog kennel website so we could look at the puppies. After a minute or two of looking we saw the most adorable black and white co.cker spaniel, the only spaniel left. My mom wanted a breed she was familiar with and since she had two co.coker spaniels growing up who were absolute angels, we decided to start looking for one. I wanted a german shepherd (obviously) or a golden retriever but due to my brother having special needs and at the time being afraid of most animals, my mom also wanted to stick with a smaller dog breed which is totally understandable.
After doing some research on the kennel and realizing we had actually been there a few times before years ago just to look at the puppies they had, we called and asked to reserve the co.cker spaniel. I immediately started brainstorming names. It was between Duncan and James. Duncan from my favorite TV show at that time, Total Drama Island and James was just a random name that I really loved. He didn’t have a middle name until he was about four I think. Originally it was going to be Dominick but I decided on Aleksandr after one of my favorite youtubers at the time, ImmortalHD.
I think it was two days after making the phone call that we went to meet and pick up our new family member. First we stopped at Petco to get food, a leash, some toys, bowls, etc. Then we finally went to the kennel to meet the little guy. He was 14 weeks old, born April 14th, 2010.
The kind lady who worked there took him back to give him a quick bath, brush him, and make him look nice before we officially met him. The second he came running out of the room to come play with us, I fell so in love with him. His little legs could barely keep up with him, he was so excited to meet people. He ran to the toy bin and pulled out literally every toy he could just to show off. She warned us that she had turned two families away from him previously because he was sometimes a little demon. They wanted him in a home that had previous experience with spaniels which thankfully we did. The lady put him back in his cage while my mom started going over and filling out the paperwork just in case other people started coming in so he wouldn’t run outside.
Two twins I had gone to preschool with and their dad came in moments later to look at the puppies. My mom recoginzied them right away and I did after a moment. It was a bit awkward because it had been a couple years but I was so excited that I didn’t care. They had asked to play with a westie and it was adorable. He kept licking everybody’s face and looked so happy!
After they had left two ladies had come in to possibly adopt a puppy. They asked to take out I think it was a maltese and oh my god. This puppy was so relaxed and cute, I could literally see that the one lady fell in love right away. She didn’t want to put her down. If I’m not mistaken she ended up reserving the puppy! :D
My mom finally finished filling out the paperwork now and the lady went to get our new family member and put him on his new leash and collar. She asked if we had a name picked out yet and I knew at that moment he was a Duncan. I carried him outside and into the car, amazed that I finally officially owned my own dog. The entire ride back home he was on my lap looking out the window, confused on where the heck he was going but excited anyway.
The second we got home my uncle, cousin (who were visiting for the weekend), and step dad came outside to meet the puppy. I walked him into our backyard (this item was our backyard at the time lol) and we all pet Duncan and were playing with him. Duncan started chasing butterflies and tried to eat them (silly baby). Then we took him inside to show him the house.
As a puppy he was terrified of stairs. He refused to go up or down them so we had to carry him at first (since he had to sleep in my room with me). He would cry the entire time going up and down and it was honestly the saddest thing ever. But as he got older he outgrew that and became a stair master!
A few months later my mom, brother, Duncan, and I were moving out of the house with my step dad (due to many personal reasons) and were living in our smallish camper together with my mom’s friend Billy and eventually his dog Nunu. It was cramped but we all got along. Nunu was Duncan’s first real encounter with another dog and it went well. He LOVED her and always wanted to be around her.
We were living on a farm campground and got to experience many things while we were there. Every day we saw ducks, turkeys, goats, sheep, donkeys, a baby cow, a pig, and a bull. Duncan loved the ducks and turkeys but they didn’t like him lol. The second he would turn his back they would turn and chase him (we always kept close watch, none of them were ever harmed or in any danger).
My brother and I would go visit my step dad every weekend and Wednesdays though. My step dad felt bad about not having any pets in the house for us there anymore and decided to get two cats. Two so that way when he was at work while we weren’t there, they could keep each other company.
Months later we eventually moved back into the house together. I think it was around Halloween. Duncan was over a year old at this point and the cats were only at the most 15-18 weeks. We were nervous because he had never met a cat before and they had never met dogs to our knowledge.
I held Duncan on his leash in the kitchen and we let the cats in. To everybody’s total surprise, Trouble ran right up to him like she had known him for years. Duncan wagged his tail the entire time and sniffed her. He even cried when she walked away and he couldn’t reach her, he totally loved her. Shaggy on the other hand… he jumped up onto a barstool and hissed at Duncan. He refused to get down when Duncan was anywhere near him for two weeks before he finally started to relax. He eventually came down and went up to Duncan and it went well. They both liked each other finally.
We’ve been through many ups and downs with this dog. The lady wasn’t lying when she said he was like a demon most of the time. Even though he’s a pain in the butt and impossible sometimes, I love him to death. He’s been by my side for over seven years now and I wouldn’t trade him for the world or anything in it.
In early 2017 during some very hard times in my family, my mom’s friend asked us to take care of his dog, Coco. It was supposed to be a temporary thing until he could find somewhere to live that allowed pit bulls but after a few weeks he ended up moving in with us instead. He is currently in the process of moving out but due to personal reasons has asked us to keep Coco permanently.
Duncan has never been a fan of dogs bigger than he is other than Nunu, but he likes Coco. They both have learned a lot from each other. Duncan doesn’t get anywhere near as anxious when he’s left alone now and Coco learned how to play with dog toys!
