Goodness, I have to say that I never expected to have you home so soon, but I am so glad you’re here. <3 You’re going to represent someone worth it, I promise.
On the Tuesday four days after my Uncle’s passing, while I was digging up old albums and things from the backs of all the closets looking for pictures and things of his to display at the wake today, I came across a little blue book that I realized was his journal. It is by no means filled, or anything close to it, but there are pages randomly throughout it that have pieces of memories he must have thought of and letters to people that he wrote but never sent and drawings and thoughts that came to his mind, even a little poem that he wrote. As I read deeper and deeper into the book, I noticed that there wasn’t a single complete story in the whole journal. He started them and told them in great detail but none of them are finished, they are cut off and ended mid sentence. There’s only one thing that is completely finished in that book and it is a short story that he wrote about a space traveler named Douglass Courage that journeyed through a galaxy called Caprilla to explore a new planet and somehow got stranded.
My uncle always loved science fiction. Just weeks ago he was taking me to the movies to see every science and space related movie that came out. I most recently remember him taking me to see that movie Passengers, and for Christmas last year he took me to go see Star Wars Rogue One on Christmas morning. He used to go outside at night with this telescope that I have no idea where came from and look for the stars, trying to figure out which stars he was looking at and then look them up in his astronomy book and come inside and tell us all about them. He knew when all the eclipses and meteor showers were going to be and made sure we all went out and watched them. This little picture to the side is of a lunar eclipse sometime I think in the past year, I don’t remember exactly, from my patio that I found on his phone.
In my bookmarks on my phone I have two links saved of things off amazon, one for a virtual reality planetarium where you could “walk” up to each star and it would tell you about it, and the other for a phone-telescope adapter so that when he looked at the stars, the phone would tell him exactly what he was looking at and take pictures of what was looking out the scope, and I was planing on spending my first pay check from the new job I started two weeks ago on buying one of them for him when he came home from the hospital. One night maybe a month ago my uncle was very sick right before he went into the hospital again, it was late at night and he stumbled out of his room with his telescope and binoculars tucked under his arm to go look at the stars and my grandma who I also live with starts screaming at him “you’re crazy Matthew! You are very sick you have no business being outside with your binoculars you crazy man!” and just going on and on yelling at him over it until he went back into his room and it broke my heart a little and I promised myself I would buy him a new telescope when he came back out of the hospital.
My uncle did not come back out of the hospital, and I will never get to buy him a new telescope.
I’m sorry I’m rambling here, as I’m writing more and more memories are flooding my head and I’m just putting down on paper as it comes to me. To sum this up, I want Tyler to name after the character from my Uncle’s story about the space traveler because I’ve never seen him write something like that before, yet is seems so like him that I almost don’t have words for it, and I know that it’s extra special because it’s the only thing in this journal that he had for years that he took the time to finish.
