Mr. Meow Meow
Shaggy ‘Buddy’ Gremlin
2011 was a rough year for my family and me. I won’t go into many details but my brother and I were back and forth. My step dad wanted us to have an animal at his house since my dog had to stay with my mother. So we started looking for a kitty cat. We decided getting two would probably be better so they could keep each other company while we were gone.
After a few days of looking around, we found an ad for free kittens in a local pet store while we were getting supplies. A lady in Maryland recently had three litters of kittens in her barn and was looking to rehome them to good homes for free. We called her when we got home and she sent us pictures of the kittens.
My step dad and I immediately wanted one of the fully black cats and then we all three agreed on one of the gray and white ones as well. A few days later, my brother and I were back to visit and we went to pick up the kittens! We met the lady halfway. The drive was only about 20 maybe 25 minutes thankfully. The second I saw them in the cage, I was ready to cry from excitement but I held back lol.
When we got back home, Trouble darted out of the cage so fast we almost didn’t even see her. She hid behind a pile of my brother’s toys and wouldn’t let us near her. Shaggy on the other hand walked out of the cage and sat in the middle of the living room to look around. He let us pet him and pick him up. Then he climbed up my step dad’s pant leg.
Near 2012 things had calmed back down and we were no longer back and forth which meant we had to introduce the dog and both cats. Duncan had been around many animals before. Goats, turkeys, ducks, donkeys, horses, sheep, and birds, but never any cats. He’s a lot to handle and very high strung so we were kind of nervous how they would react to him.
I held on to Duncan on a leash and we let the cats in the kitchen to meet him. To everybody’s surprise, Trouble approached him like she had known him for years. Shaggy however refused to go near him for over two weeks. He would hide on top of tall chairs and other furniture and hiss at him. After awhile, he went near him and found out he actually liked the guy. :) All three of them have been best friends ever since.
It’ll be five years since we brought them home this year (2016) in September. They’ve both grown a lot over that time and have gotten more brave and loving. Shaggy likes to bop Duncan’s tail when he isn’t looking. He’s nervous around company but warms up within three hours or so. He’s my little fuzzy buddy. ♥
You might be wondering why the heck part of this cat’s name is Gremlin. You might not be. Either way I’m going to tell you. The lady we had gotten the kittens from had already named Shaggy, she thought the name fit him well (which it does). However my step dad pointed out that he looked like a gremlin and everybody agreed. He really did when he was a kitten, it was unbelievable. We debated on getting rid of the name Shaggy and just calling him Gremlin instead but the name Shaggy had already grew on us by then so we made it his last name.
When his fur started to grow, he stopped looking like a gremlin. Now he only does if you press his fur down. So now we’re all very glad we stuck with Shaggy instead.
One of Shaggy’s nicknames, Puppycat, describes his personality pretty well. Taken from the animated web series, Bee and PuppyCat, Puppycat is a mysterious creature that is both a dog and a cat. Shaggy tends to act like both a dog and a cat. I’m a little convinced he is actually part dog.
Shaggy is a very loyal, affectionate, and sweet cat. He loves loves loves sitting on my lap and sleeping with me. He also enjoys getting his chin scratched and sometimes his tummy. The phrase curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back, applies to him. He likes getting his nose into anything and everything which often results in broken objects.
We keep this love in this photograph. We made these memories for ourselves. Where our eyes are never closing, our hearts were never broken, times forever frozen still. So you can keep me inside the pocket of your ripped jeans. Holdin me closer til our eyes meet. You won’t ever be alone.
Wait for me to come home.
