lost stat golden retriever (-2)
This dog represents someone very special to me, so prepare for this to be long… He represent my real life Golden Retriever, Duke. Duke is my baby…. He’s my world. Duke is five years old and was born on Christmas. Honestly, without Duke I don’t know where I would be today. Duke keeps my head held high in the hard times and keeps me smiling on my best days. I have so many stories to share with you about my boy and I, so if you enjoy hearing about a girl and her best friend go grab some popcorn and enjoy c:
It all started on February 13th, 2011. My mom woke all three of us kids up and told us we have to go on a business trip for my fathers work. We knew something was up, because never have we went on one before. A few weeks before this day, I was talking to my mother about getting a new dog. We had looked up some golden retriever puppies, but my dad was not a fan of big hairy dogs. So his answer was a no. I was saddened since we just had to say goodbye to our Lhasa Pooh, lucky… Now back to February 13th. When we arrived at a farm my brothers and I knew exactly why we were here. I jumped out the car and was greeted by Duke’s mother. The owners of the farm took us around back where the puppies were. All the females were already sold, therefor we got to pick out of five males. Now let’s take this story back a few weeks.. When my mom and I first contacted the breeders they sent us a few photos. My mother and I were looking at these puppies photos, and we both fell in love with the red color puppy. My dad, however, was a little clingy towards the black color puppy. Now back to the story~ We played around with the golden puppies for a good ten minutes before I picked up the red color puppy and said, “I want this one mommy.” All my brothers agreed and we drove off that day with the red color puppy.
The whole car ride home Duke sat on my lap. I guess you could say I was the puppy hog c: hehe! While Duke was fast asleep on my lap, our whole family was coming up with names. I offered hunter, my brothers said Scout and Gunner. Those were all good names, but none fit his personality. So my mother turned to lucky ole Facebook and asked for opinions. My aunt commented under saying, Duke. It was a common name, but I loved it. We all agreed on Duke to be his name. But Duke didn’t seem to care! He was snoring on my lap. That dog was tucked out from playing with us three kids and his little brothers!
That night we went to the pet store to get supplies and toys. We bought Duke a camo color(which I still have), a large kennel, some bowls, and some toys. However, when we went down the toy isle Duke went crazy! Never had he seen so many toys before cx He ran straight to a dragon toy. He picked it up and wouldn’t let go. We all assumed that was the one he wanted. I have a picture of him that day with the toy, so I will post it below :) we also got him a carrot toy like from bolt and a few balls.
The next day my neighbors were outside with their golden, Riley. I ran over there to let Riley meet Duke. Right away a bond clicked! We were close with Riley’s owners. Their son was four years older than me, and I told him weeks before we got Duke that I was going to talk my mom into letting me get a golden. Let’s just say his golden made me fall for the breed! When I got Duke i ran over to him and told him “I told you!!!! Look at Duke!!!”. Never did I feel so proud as a 9 year old! I also have a picture of Duke and Riley together before Riley passed. I will post that down below as well.
A few weeks later I was laying down on the floor playing on my little laptop I got for Christmas. I was laying on my stomach and my feet were out so Duke came and laid right between them. He rested his head on my leg and never had i seen anything so cute! He one day grew out of that, but boy did I feel special when he did it c: my mom was lucky enough to snap a picture of it one day!
Duke would often wonder off in the house and we went on a wild goose chase looking for him. Once we found him barried deep inside some pillows on my moms bed fast asleep. Hands down, that was one of the most precious things Duke has ever done..
Just like every puppy, Duke got into trouble. This only happened once, but I was off playing outside and my mom fell asleep on the couch next to Duke. Duke must’ve hopped off the couch and gotten into the toilet paper. Oh boy did he trash the house!!! I came inside to my mom making him pose for a picture in front of his mess! Guess who got a timeout got that one!!!
As Duke got older he found a love for the park. We would often go to our local park(which was a block from our house). He would run fast up the stairs and head straight for the slides! Never have I seen a dog love slides so much!! He will go up and down them like he’s a kid in a candy store. You can just tell he is having the time of his life… Thankfully, for me, he never grew out of that. One of these days I need to record him >.< lol!
As Duke got older I decided to make an Instagram for him. It was known as Dukie_thegolden, however it no long exists. I was in fifth grade at the time with over 7,000 followers on that account. Boy don’t I wish I still had that account. So many memories. Instagram encouraged me to start training my dog. I was only 11, but boy did I teach him a lot. Duke learned the basics, how to shake, balance a treat, agility, and a bunch more! I was a proud mama c:
A few years ago I started to go to my grandmas every summer for a few weeks. I decided it would be perfect for Duke and I to get away. Since he was my dog my parents were okay with this. In the summer of 2012 I found my love for photography. Duke was also so photogenic that he made it easy to take photos of him. Every morning at around 6 AM I would jump out of bed (at my grandmas) take Duke on a morning walk, then go off into the woods to take pictures. I will add a few of the photos I’ve taken bellow!
Just a few days ago(as of June 23rd, 2016) I went on a vacation to the Windy City, Chicago. Since we were going to be out and about all day my family and I decided to not take the dogs with us. The cats stayed home that week(the neighbors checked on them for us) and our two little dogs stayed with my grandparents. However, my grandparents don’t like big dogs so we were drawn between taking Duke to the kennels that week or asking someone to take him. Of course I wanted what was best for him so I tossed the kennel idea. He went to stay with a daycare family that week and their pitbull Bella. After a few play dates and getting warmed up to each other they’re best friends. While I was away I would get text messages of Duke playing with Bella and their three year old kid. They would also wake him up at 5AM and take him on a 5k run! Duke had a blast there <3
Duke and I share so many memories together that it would take years to write it all out. My brain is fried, but as soon as I can think of more and live more memories with him I will write them down.. thank you for actually reading this all!
