Advice on changing my dog's name

Medium

I was recently given a timid white Chihuahua by the name of Killer. If he was the only pet, I know it would be pretty straight forward to just change it. But there are a couple reasons that cause me to not know how to go about it. First, I don’t know how old he is. Then there is the fact that there are 6 other dogs and 2 cats in the home. So with so many other names around him, how do I go about changing it to Sam? He is definitely no ‘Killer’.

I find the name quite cute actually. It reminds me of “courage the cowardly dog”. If you plan to change it to Sam, you could try calling him by that name and see how it goes. If none of the other dogs/cats respond, you could probably try to teach him that it is his name. Another way is to use a name that sounds similar to “Killer”.

Thanks for the input, jjagpae. I wonder if when he and I are one on one if I keep saying something like. ‘Sam is a good boy’ (or something similar) would that get the ball rolling.

Oh yes, that might work. I feel like that’s probably something you should try first because it seems logical to do so!

In my opinion, you could name him Tacos.

Try calling him Sam, and when he responds by even looking around, much less looking at you, tell him, “Good boy, Sam!”, and give him a treat.

We always rename our shelter cats. They learn fast. We pick them up, coo at them whilst calling them by their new name as well as the other technique, and they answer to their name pretty quickly. Achilles learned his name in a week. He is a really smart boy, though.
