Well the Procreate app isn’t free, I think it’s like $10?

Also the iPad you get depends on the pencil you get. The new pencil only works with the newest iPads, old pencil only works on the old iPads.

I started off with a second hand iPad Pro 2015 12.9" with the first generation pen. It worked great until the iPad started having battery issues (draining faster than it would charge) and touch would stop working now and then which was annoying when trying to zoom on a drawing haha.

Just before Christmas I updated to the newest iPad Pro 12.9" and 2nd generation pen. What you choose really depends on your budget, buying the newest and biggest one is obviously more expensive. I went with a 256gb one because more capacity is more money :’) But I have always found buying from apple with apple care is worth it.
I personally like the new one and 2nd gen pencil better. The 2nd gen pencil has a tap function to switch between eraser and brush which is handy. And I love that it charges by attaching to the side of the iPad rather than needing a cable.

ALSO keep in mind the pencil only works with certain iPads. Here’s the lists:

2nd Gen:
12.9-inch iPad Pro (3rd generation)
11-inch iPad Pro

1st gen:
iPad Air (3rd generation)
iPad mini (5th generation)
iPad (7th generation)
iPad (6th generation)
12.9-inch iPad Pro (2nd generation)
12.9-inch iPad Pro (1st generation)
10.5-inch iPad Pro
9.7-inch iPad Pro

Procreate isn’t free, but it’s a once off purchase and 100% worth it. Though if you want to start with a free program I recommend Autodesk Sketchbook
