How many dogs is too many

Medium

My boyfriend is trying to convince me to go look at puppies with him tomorrow….. we have 8 dogs to begin with… 8!!!! And he wants another one. When we started dating I had 5 dogs. Within the past 2 years we acquired 3 more. I need someone who says no to puppies, not someone who convinces me we need more

It depends. I have five. My vet has eight, many fellow dog trainers have eight or more. One at Purina I know has 16. A groomer at the vet office I work at has 10. I think as long as all the dogs are taken care and you have time for them then the more the merrier.

The most dogs I have had in my home at one time was 18 with my personal dogs, client dogs, and foster dogs. I don’t have a problem taking care of multiple dogs. But I also own my own business and have the freedom and flexibility to work from home, or make trips home during the workday to make sure everyone is taken care of. Plus working at a vets office gives me a discount on vetting and we have something called a foster bank or rescue bank here so I get quality food for super cheap. :) Anyways I think it’s all on how you can provide for them.

I stayed home with my dogs for the past year. But i just recently got a part time job at a doggy daycare I start in a few weeks. I am allowed to bring a few of my dogs to work everyday as long as they are well behaved.
We feed them Purina dog chow / puppy chow. Which isn’t the best but it’s what my dogs have been on even back when I owned only one dog. I have flea meds and heart worm meds for everyone but it does certainly get expensive. I have 3 dog rooms in my house and a huge fenced in yard with an in ground pool for the summer they can all enjoy.
If me and my bf ever did break up we already talked about who gets what dogs and all that good stuff, but I highly doubt we ever would considering we bought a house together and everything. I’m just worried about the day we have kids and what if my kids allergic or something

The most we’ve had at one stage was 4 and I feel like 3 was pushing it lol, but that’s just me

Consider how well they are getting along right now before you are getting another one. If everyone gets along, then what happens if another one is added to the mix.

Do you have the option to foster? That would allow you to determine how the pupper would fit into your home. If he gets along, then adopt. If not, you can return it without reservation

I had 3 cats – an older (14 year old) and two kittens (male and female). All got along until I brough in a male (older kitty about 13) into the mix. The kittens did not accept him. The prior owner surrendered him to my (i drove over to her home and she handed him to me). I had never had four at the same time. Now that the older ones are gone, I have two and will stay at that amount until one passes.

I believe you can own any amount of dogs that you want as long as you have adequate time to spend training and caring for each individual dog, as well as enough space for and financials.

I can never see myself owning more than 1-2 personal dogs at a time, although I’ve already promised to raise therapy puppies for a program in my area so I’ll likely always have a household with 2-3 dogs!

Right now my boy is proving to be a handful so I’m definitely not ready to take on another personal dog at the moment, though in two or three years I’ll have a therapy puppy to train on top of working with my boy. It’ll be a bit of a madhouse!

I envy your bravery to own eight and now possibly nine dogs! I wish I could haha!

Update: we got a puppy 🙄 when we got there the guy said 3 puppies went missing and think they either got lost in the woods or eaten by a coyote. There was only one female left so we ended up bringing her home. I felt too guilty leaving her outside in the cold with the possibility she could be a snack for some animal tonight

as many as you can legally have, emotionally and financially provide for haha.
for me personally, 4/5 would be my absolute max, but I’d prefer about 2/3 so my love and attention isn’t so spread out.

congrats on the new pup, I want pictures c’:
sad to hear about the other ones…

I think it just depends on the situation! I know a good number for me is 2 or 3 lol, though I only have one! My sister and brother in law train dogs and rescue and have nine doggos! Lots of work, but really rewarding !

You’re puppy is adorable tho !
